Monika Zimmermann is Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI, based at the ICLEI World Secretariat in Bonn/ Germany. She is also acting as Deputy Executive Director/ Finance Manager of the ICLEI World Secretariat. Before March 2013, she used to be Director of ICLEI's global Capacity Center. Until mid 2010, she lead ICLEI's International Training Centre since its foundation in 1993. She has been the manager of numerous significant international training projects as well as congresses and seminars on subjects including Local Agenda 21, mobility, urban governance, resource management, energy management and climate protection, local renewable energy, and urban sustainability. The multiple large international local government conferences in her responsibility include the Local Government Session at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg 2002, the Municipal Leaders Summits on Climate Change, organised back-to-back to the UNFCCC Conferences of the Parties and the ICLEI World Congresses. Furthermore, Monika has designed ICLEI’s WWW-based distance training scheme and supervised distance training courses on Local Agenda 21 and environmental management. Having done studies in political and administrative sciences and journalism at the universities of Konstanz and Berlin, Germany, Monika holds a Master’s degree in Political Science (FU Berlin). She has worked as a researcher at the Institute for Urban Research (IfS) in Berlin. She published various books and founded and edited environmental.magazines. For many years, Monika served as board member of national NGOs, eg the Deutscher Naturschutzring, the German umbrella organisation of environmental and nature protection organisations.
