In 2010, the City of Burnaby approved a municipal zoning bylaw for the UniverCity community development that makes its building standards the greenest in North America. It is the first bylaw in North America that mandates specific green building practices as part of the development process. The outcome of these will be buildings that are at least 30 percent more efficient than traditional buildings. The bylaw promotes innovative building practices through a results-based approach that requires a specific increase in efficiency rather than a specific type of energy certification.
