Built Environment refers to the human-made surroundings that provide the settings for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings and parks or green space to neighborhoods and cities, including their supporting infrastructure such as water supply or energy networks.  Urban design unites all the built environment professions, including urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, civil and municipal engineering.

New vertical garden allows food bank to serve up fresh greens

A food bank in Cloverdale, B.C., will begin growing its own food in the new year with two indoor growing walls capable of producing up to 600 pounds of fresh produce each year.  These vertical gardens are soil-less, require no weeding and take up minimal space.  (The president of the organization behind this initiative was one of my students – he worked on this project in one of my classes last year.)  See full story here.
