Built Environment refers to the human-made surroundings that provide the settings for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings and parks or green space to neighborhoods and cities, including their supporting infrastructure such as water supply or energy networks.  Urban design unites all the built environment professions, including urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, civil and municipal engineering.

Resilient Cities 2018

Resilient Cities – The Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation – is the global platform for urban resilience and climate change adaptation. Resilient Cities was first launched in 2010 with the goal of connecting local government leaders and climate change adaptation experts to discuss adaptation challenges facing urban environments around the globe and forging partnerships that could have lasting impacts for cities. The 9th edition of the Resilient Cities congress series will take place on 26-28 April 2018.

ICLEI World Congress 2018

ICLEI World Congress 2018 will be hosted by the City of Montreal, Canada.

Held every three years, the ICLEI World Congress assembles hundreds of local and regional governments, international agencies, national governments, donors and other partners from around the world. Together they set the course for globalizing urban sustainability. During the congress, cities, towns and regions connect with peers, foster partnerships and exchange information and experiences. This event is a key milestone in driving stronger collective local action.

New vertical garden allows food bank to serve up fresh greens

A food bank in Cloverdale, B.C., will begin growing its own food in the new year with two indoor growing walls capable of producing up to 600 pounds of fresh produce each year.  These vertical gardens are soil-less, require no weeding and take up minimal space.  (The president of the organization behind this initiative was one of my students – he worked on this project in one of my classes last year.)  See full story here.
